If you could haul liberal and conservative America into a counselor's office, the left would produce loads of evidence showing that conservatism is regularly anti-intellectual when it comes to questions of evolution or global climate change. Sarah Palin really did evince a limited knowledge of foreign affairs during the 2008 election. George W. Bush really did say "misunderestimate." Conservatives would tell the counselor about how liberals are always slow to see threats to national security, always "blaming America" and always quick to support international institutions such as the U.N. and the International Court of Justice.At least the article was not written by Saletan or Hitchens or Yoffe.

I just wrote something along these lines today too... only more influenced by Daddy Karl than that! ;)
But here is the real question: Who can afford mere contempt while the other side is so blatantly ANGRY? Don't the liberals want to know why they're so pissed off?
Interesting introduction to the problem, but it doesn't go far enough re: WHY.
(It's also "understood" which side the author is on: us cool, ironically hip, enlightened liberal folks of course.)
Heh. I noticed that; he gives "liberals" better lines.
I have to wonder if some of the anger is due to perceived lacks in conservatism (obviously, conservatives pick up on the contempt, but I've seen that anger even when no contempt was in evidence; it seems to be worse when one tries to understand them!).
What is "America" in the "blame America' rhetoric?
The 360 million people who live here?
The land mass between Mexico and Canada (itself part of America)?
The transient office holders who have demonstrated repeatedly their contempt for the people whose hard work built and has sustained this country?
The warmongering pricks who fritter our money away on their tiresome and wasteful and ILLEGAL wars?
Just what is this "America" liberals blame?
It's just a bunch of totalitarian claptrap. Hating what these criminals have done to the USA is NOT hating "America" it's hating the pirates that have destroyed us.
